'Goat?!' I hear you cry, 'Who on earth would eat goat?'.  Well apparently 80% of the world population and rising!  But I'm not going to convince you to give goat a try by using peer pressure - goat meat should speak for itself.

Sometimes sold as 'Cabrito' or 'Chevon', goat is the new wonder meat for all you health-conscious people out there.  It is low in cholesterol, high in iron, and ounce for ounce has less fat than chicken.  Taste-wise goat is like a cross between lamb and beef, giving it a familiar flavour that appeals to many people.

Here at Elvingston we cross-breed dairy does with our Boer billy (called Caesar).  Boers, as the name suggests, are a breed originating in South Africa, and are stocky, muscle-bound animals.  They cross very well with the dairy breeds and produce very high quality meat.

Our goats have the run of almost all our fields throughout the year since they are such good weed-killers - chomping on dock and nettles before they can get a foothold.  Like many of our animals they are offered windfall apples and plums, and anything spoiled in the vegetable beds.
